A new study from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that women who used chemical hair straighteners had more than double the risk of uterine cancer.

Predatory marketing

Plaintiffs argue that major cosmetic manufacturers (including L’Oréal and Revlon) knew about harmful ingredients—like phthalates and parabens—but failed to warn the public. And they were marketed as being safe and gentle.

Women at risk

Women who used hair straighteners are at risk, with Black women in greater danger than those of other demographics. The NIH found that about 60% of its study respondents that used hair straighteners were Black women.

11,000+ claims

This has rapidly become one of the largest active mass torts in the United States, with over 11,700 pending lawsuits consolidated into a federal Multidistrict Litigation (MDL-3060) in the Northern District of Illinois under Judge Mary Rowland.

Status: initial trials

Currently, the judge is selecting 10 representative "bellwether" cases that will set the baseline for how juries react to the scientific evidence and will heavily influence future settlement structures.

Data from 33,947 women aged 35 to 74 found women who used hair relaxers at least five times a year had more than double the incidence of uterine cancer rates than those who never used them.

Hair Dye and Chemical Straightener Use and Breast Cancer Risk in a Large U.S. Population of Black and White Women

This study used data from 46,709 women, and linked chemical hair straighteners to a nearly 30% increased risk of breast cancer. Women with an increased risk used chemical hair straighteners every five to eight weeks.
